The Divorce Mediation Center of Long Island provides services for couples going through divorce or separation. The practice is lead by Dr. Emanuel Plesent. The center specializes in resolving conflicts such as family and children, parenting responsibilities such as access, custody and support, distribution of marital assets, alimony, and other related issues. The Divorce Mediation Center of Long Island seeks to help couples deal with the issues at hand with respect for both parties.

The process of mediation begins with an initial consultation. This appointment is free of charge and allows the participants to ask questions about the process and discover if it is for them. For those interested, they may begin the first session of mediation immediately following the consultation. Sessions usually last an hour and meet the mediator on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. For those with busy schedules, this format can be modified to accommodate their time constraints. On average, most participants use six sessions of mediation. However, this number can fluctuate depending on the issues involved, i.e. children, custody, alimony, etc.

Are you separating of divorcing?

The process of mediation is non-legal. The mediator prepares a plain-language Memorandum of Understanding setting forth all the terms needed for a separation or divorce with the exception of legal language and signatures. The couple may then submit the Memorandum of Understanding to their attorney who prepares a legally binding Separation Agreement, which may also be used as a basis of a Divorce at this time or in the future.

Dr. Plesent has over 25 years of experience as a separation and divorce mediator and family therapist. He received accreditation in Divorce Mediation from the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation. Dr. Plesent is a Practitioner Member of the Association for Conflict Resolution and an Associate Member of the American Bar Association. He  is also licensed in New York State as a Certified Social Worker and as a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. Dr. Plesent has become a leading authority in the field of divorce mediation and assists clients in the greater New York area.

Fees are based on hourly rates and conducive with the complexity and length of the prescribed sessions. Couples usually split the fees in half and can make payments after each session. These fees, in light of the potential aggravation and delay using traditional divorce methods, can easily pay for itself. The result is a life-changing event that can be guided by an impartial third party dedicated to providing equal care and treatment.
